Nowruz is the Persian New Year, and it’s one of the most important holidays in my family. We celebrate it every spring on the first day of the new year in the Iranian calendar. My mom says it’s about new beginnings, and I like that idea. Every year, we set up a table with seven things that start with the letter “S” in Persian. My favorite thing on the table is sabzeh. We also have a mirror, candles, and sometimes even a goldfish. Each item means something special. When the New Year begins, we all hug and say Happy New Year. Then we eat sweets! I love talking about Nowruz to my friends in class because I like how Nowruz helps me feel connected to my family’s culture.

I make falafel with my dad it is one of my favorite things. First, we mash peas.  It smells really good with herbs. They make a loud sound in apan. My dad cuts tomatoes. When the falafel is ready, we sit down and eat together. The outside is crunchy and the inside is soft. I like dipping mine in yogurt.

Making falafel with my family makes me feel happy.

Holidays With My Family by Anonymous, Grade 4

Diwali is so fun. We put lights all around the house and they make everything shiny. I help my mom. We make colors on the floor and my hands get messy. At night we light all the lamps and it looks pretty. I get sweets. I cover my ears at fireworks but I still like them. Diwali makes me happy.

When my cousins come over for Christmas, our house gets super loud. We all run aroundbut end up in the kitchen because that’s where the best part of the day happens. My family keeps a lot of our traditions, especially with food, so holidays always smell like saffron and  rice. My favorite thing is when my aunt opens the pot of tahdig. All

My family keeps a lot of our traditions, especially with food, so holidays always smell like saffron and  rice. My favorite thing is when my aunt opens the pot of tahdig. All of us want the crunchy part. My cousins and I try to guess who will get the biggest piece. I’m glad we celebrate like this, all together, with food from our family.
